Hi there, I'm Ali.
I have a love for mathematics, computer science, and economics. I love building things and have recently spent time as a quant. My technical interests span decision theory, information theory, simulation, stochastic control and much more. Here you'll find some of my writing, both technical and not.
I believe that:
- Anything is learnable. Or rather, at least a lot more than we give ourselves credit for typically. Regardless of the 'truth' of such a statement, being optimistic provides us a requisite comfort and ambition to learn passionately.
- We each have a responsibility for kindness. Negative energy should be viewed as a multiplicative process: the only thing we can do is be a dampening node by turning the other cheek when it comes our way.
- Authenticity should be valued more in society; life is too short to feel like you have to wear a mask all the time.
- We're all wrong but wish to do our best to grow our scope of understanding. Humility both in the emotional and intellectual sense is something we should strive for.
- Imagination and wonder are what will keep us young forever. The 'realities' of life shouldn't erase childlike curiosities.
Some things to talk to me about:
- Bayesian and Popperian epistemology as frameworks for reasoning.
- The most critical problems in our public education systems.
- Literary fiction. Particularly the genres of bildungsroman, works in translation and 20th century classics.
- Athletics and team sports. Tips on how I can increase my vertical jump are very welcome.
